Pretty standard team for me in TA is boon prot monk, interrupt/caster shutdown ranger, gale axe warrior, and air ele with blinding flash+windborne. Seems to work fairly well, flash takes care of warriors, windborne takes care of kiting enemy monks, interrupts take care of casters. Throw monk secondary on that ele for judge's insight and you've got things rolling.

a team of 3 thumpers and a good monk can dominate TA for quite a few matches

In fact, in general it's not too hard to do well in TA if you have compotent players and skills that complement each other. In other words, there is no "best".

1 warriors shutdown necro, 1 caster shutdown mes or ranger, 1 axe/hammer warrior, 1 boon prot.

Played well you should have trouble losing.

Yeah basically that sums it up.

Here's the key things you want your team to be able to do:

1. Warrior/Ranger shutdown. Blinding Flash is great. Recharges in 4. Sure the monk can remove it once or twice, but presumably he will be busy saving his own hide. Spiteful/Shadow of Fear/etc, same deal, but typically for SS you need to make your build around Curses, which is primarily oriented toward shutdown (warriors mostly) and not so much on damage. Blinding Flash fits well into any Air build, which is a high damage line.

2. Caster shutdown. Stop those Mesmers. Usually you should have 2 on the monk and 1 on the mesmer. KD warrior (hammer or axe w/ gale/shock) or interrupt ranger is good for this. I like bringing Distracting Blow on my warrior for this reason also.

3. Monk shutdown. Well, yeah. Kinda obvious but sometimes overlooked. Mesmer/Int Ranger/KD Warrior/KD Ele/etc.

4. Damage. Air Ele, Warrior, Ranger.

5. Boon Prot monk. This build works well, and unless you have a friend who happens to like playing monk, 1 of you is going to get stuck with it so you might as well use something that works.

Often we run Air Ele w/ Blinding Flash, Axe War w/ Shock/Gale, Boon Prot Monk, and Something Else. The Something Else could be a Shutdown Mez, E Denial Mez, Int Ranger, etc.

However with that said it is always fun to experiment. Running crazy builds in TA is what makes this game fun (much easier than setting up a crazy Tombs build I might add). Besides, you don't want to win EVERY match do ya??

I like boon prot + surge mesmer + frenzy gale axe warrior + something else, ranger interrupter maybe, perhaps a thumper... I think as far as mesmers go E-Denial is the way to go in TA, too much copping and 1/4 second casting times to shut down boon prots which are the monk of choice for TA. Hammer warriors can be nice too - real pain in the ass for boon prot monks if they don't manage to break the knockdown chain

Best team I ever fought had 4 mesmers. My team had come out of CA and entered TA due to winning 10 straight battles. We were on a massive roll to the point where we were on about our 25th win when suddenly we encountered this uber 1337 Korean team of 4 mesmers. We were totally dominated. We were losing HP by the bucket loads and we couldn't even do anything. It was quick and painful with hexes and all sorts of confusion thrown everywhere. It was total chaos.

The one thing I just don't get is why almost every group you see forming requires both a healing and a protection monk. It saddens me to see such sorry players.

It is just easyer to get more consecutive wins that way.

For my 4 man team you can get rid of the prot and healer and swap them with a boon prot and a trapper. That also works well.

I went to TA with my wo/mo kd/holy strike warrior and hit the enter mission button. I was teamed up with 2 r/w thumpers and an interrupter. This team had lost their monk.
All three were a little upset at the loss, but we continued anyway.
After 16 straight wins, I had to quit, as my faction had topped out. Basically the three hammer weilders picked seperate targets, and the interrupt ranger caused some havic (he was the first killed EVERY battle, if we had a death...)
This team had absolutely no healing, only a single inspired hex remover from the ranger interrupter, and owned.

A little lesson here...It can be done without a monk.

agreed, as long as you have decent players, lots of things work. Heres a bunch of builds that have worked for me:

2 Axe Warrior/mes with Fear Me and Drain Enchant, 2 Boon Prot monk/mes with energy drain (pre-nerf), drain enchant, and inspired hex. (What I ran with iQ, probably won't work as well anymore since energy drain got hit with a nerf bat)

3 Axe Warriors and a Boon Prot monk/nec.

1 Axe Warrior, 1 Ele/Warrior glimmering mark, 1 mesmer/ele shutdown, 1 boon prot

On another note, team arena is so easy you can probably get nice sucess with a jank build like this:
1 Necro BiPer with shadow strike and vamp gaze
2 Ranger/Ele spikers with Oath shot and glyph of sacrifice, dual shot, lightning orb, savage shot for the spike, along with conjure lightning and read the wind.
1 Boon Prot.

A prot booner,a healer,a gale axer and a migraine or e-surge mes will usually guarentee you a good deal of success in TA.

I still hold by my claim that one good boon prot is all any team needs in 4 vs 4. Any more than that just gimps you against good teams. Coming from the guy who actually plays the boon prot, my job is much harder in two monk teams. The other monk is just another soft target for me to heal, while we struggle to kill anyone with only 2 damage/shutdown characters.

Yeah i hate when my group is stuck against a group with 2 or 3 good monks. Talk about frustrating. Or when theres a monk/warrior that uses sprint and mend and runs around arena, arrrgggg im mad just talking about it lol.
